This is Polly. She was identified in the shelter by one volunteer, transported by another, fostered by a third. Then she went happily on her way to a new home with both human and dog companions. She shares this story with most of our dogs – without the help of volunteers, we simply would not be able to help these hounds.

No one is paid to do this work – except in significant deposits of joy!  You can be part of this great and growing rescue effort – and have the satisfaction of knowing that you contributed to safe and happy lives for over a hundred Bassets in the Pacific Northwest annually!  Below are listed our highest priority needs. But we are open to any and all ideas for how to make all this work better!

YFoster Home

We are almost always in need of foster homes. Most of the dogs we get in are housebroken, well-mannered and healthy.  Fostering usually lasts from a week to a month or so, and even very short-term foster care like a couple of days can make a really big difference for us  - sometimes we must be able to provide same-day response to shelters in order to save Bassets. What’s needed is a fenced yard and a willingness to care for an extra dog temporarily. We cover veterinary care, can provide a crate for safe-keeping, and will happily answer questions and share what we know from years of fostering. Click here to request a foster home application to be emailed or mailed to you. If you are curious but have questions about fostering, do drop us a line or give one of us a call.

YVolunteer Coordinator!

Our totally fantastic volunteer coordinator is taking a break. She has set up systems that really work. Can you help us keep her momentum going? Are you a people person? Do you like to match people who care with things that need doing for the hounds? We REALLY need you and your organizational skills!

YAdopter Screening and Home Visitor

For every adoption, we need at a minimum a phone or in-person interview and reference checks. In some cases, we require home visits. Reference checks and initial interviews can be conducted by phone. Can you help us make sure that Bassets we are placing are going to secure, safe homes?

YTransportation facilitator

Set up long-distance relays when dogs must be transported from foster care to their new homes across state or out of state.

YFundraiser!

Help us raise cash and donated materials and/or veterinary care for the Basset Hounds in our care. We do receive donations when we place dogs, but on average, we spend more than we take in…every donation helps!

We have other opportunities for volunteers – writing, web design and maintenance, outreach coordinator.  Please let us know if you are interested in any of these opportunities – or think that there are other ways that you can pitch in to rescue Basset Hounds. Many hands make light work – and a lot of fun too!
